It is the second volume in her new collection of books about immigrants to America titled, THE SCATTERED SEEDS SERIES. The novel is based upon her second manuscript “A Matter of Deception” and previously self-published novel, THE ROAD TO RIGHTEOUSNESS, published in 2012. It represents Mauras rewrite of the story with specific editing and restructuring designed to place new emphasis on its plot and characterization for its inclusion in THE SCATTERED SEEDS SERIES. The series depicts the lives of American Immigrants, those who have made up what has sometimes been called, “The Great Melting Pot of the World”, during various times in the country’s history. In 1855, Thomas Darby Martin is a member of one of the most prestigious families in Ireland. He loves Ireland – more than anything or anyone in his life – except, perhaps, for ‘MARY’, and he couldnt imagine ever leaving his beloved homeland. Only twenty-five years old, he has gained a notorious reputation all across Ireland, but especially on the west coast. Continually pursuing his vices of liquor, women, and gambling instead of portraying the family virtues, his aristocratic family has gone to great lengths to protect the family name in the past. However, when their youngest son kills Seamus OMalley, a man he has hated since childhood, in a bar room brawl over a woman, they banish him, taking away his birthright, telling him never to return to Ireland. Darby decides that he will use cold hard lies and deception to start his new life in America and become a righteous man. His road to happiness in a new country will be a rocky one as America is facing a civil war and the lovely Irish lass with whom he falls in love with has some secrets of her own, ones she will not share with anyone, especially Darby.Stranded as a stowaway on the RECURRENT, an American ship, Darby reflects on his life and his new losses, particularly those that will finally deny him any chance of having the woman of his dreams, ‘MARY OMALLEY’ – now a widow by his own hand. Cutting his losses and looking forward, he spends the long days on the ship scheming, developing a plan for survival, intended to avoid capture. He vows that he will use lies and deception to cover up the truths of his cold past and never share his former life in Ireland with anyone, not even the young and lovely ‘BRIGID ANNE FINNEGAN’, his newest love interest in Baltimore.Along with all of the other Irish, Darby faces a rocky road in America. The country is in a great deal of turmoil and his road to happiness is not going to be an easy one. There is a Civil War brewing and Brigid has some secrets of her own, ones that she will never admit to anyone, especially Darby. As they begin their new lives in a new country, their mutual lies weave a web of deception that will haunt them, taking them back to their former lives in Ireland – from their graves.
